Are All Of These Online Job Applications Just Advertising Gimmicks Now? Or Are They Real Applications?
Uncategorized February 7th, 2010I’m not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but I have tried to apply for a number of jobs online lately - jobs I found through CarrerBuilder and Monster - and instead of a regular online application, I have to wade through a series of questions, like some kind of marketing campaign. Has anyone else experienced this? Are these legitimate sites? Are the apps ever really looked at? Any info you can provide is greatly appreciated.

It’s annoying, but I have had interviews based on these apps from Monster.com and the interviewers all told me that these questions are to help weed out those that they don’t want to interview. Basically, if the applicant can’t take the time to answer a few questions online, then the company doesn’t want to take the time to deal with them.
Good luck!

Yes they are gimmicks.

A lot of companies have an online application…but at the end of the application, there may be up to 120+ questions to answer. It does feel like you are taking a marketing survey of some type, and they are annoying. Most of the ones I have encountered have a lot of job-related questions, too.
Most of the questions I have come across give different settings and events that could happen at a job, then list a multiple choice of reactions to the situation or events, to determine (by your answer) how you would react to them.
A lot of them have annoying questions that have the multiple choice answers:
A) Completely Agree
B) Agree
C) Disagree
D) Completely Disagree
After filling out countless applications with these questions at the end….I’ve also determined that they are either completely disagree or completely agree…the two “in-between” answers actually make you LOSE points. The systems assign a score for each individual that answers the questions…and the scores determine who gets called for an interview. A lot of the questions are simple, yet can be tricky if you don’t stop and think for a few seconds, because of the way they purposefully word them.

I typically stay away from those sites just because the scammers are now paying to post there. Sad, isn’t it? Or they are sales/marketing type business opps or something I would never do.
To get the upper hand in online jobs I have a good resource for you. http://www.workathomedesk.com - is a free site that has an excellent directory of legitimate companies that hire telecommuters. Depending on your skills and experience, you should be able to get several good leads there. If you ever wonder about the legitimacy of a company, go to http://www.wahm.com telecommuting board and search the board or ask. Hope this helps!
