sometimes i shake my head in disbelief at what i find to be entertaining. often, i am amazed that people who advertise really believe that their efforts could persuade me to buy ANYthing. yet they continue. and i resist.
eventually though, something breaks through and i laugh, or i cry, or i buy a baby ruth. do i feel like i’ve been duped? not if i feel that the movie was excellent and thoughtful, or that i would have purchased the candy bar anyway. but if i feel i’ve been misled by a claim, i feel cheated. lowered self-esteem? naaah, i’ll be more resolute next time, and ready for them.
are guilty pleasures really guilty? sometimes, they are necessary… to thoroughly enjoy life.

the marketing industry shows people that are “beautiful and amazing” . they show how their products can make you look like this. it mainly pertains to women. it is just a way they can sucker us in to buying their products and which they can make more money. and it also pertains to men to.

I would think that it would take a person of good self-esteem to wade through the myriad of total crap that is out there. On the other hand, how do you think the advertisors make money? Praying on those who don’t feel their own self worth! As for entertainment…there is not much out there anymore that is worth paying for. I think that a lot of people have lost their own ideals and self preservation. They seem to be content to wallow in the muck rather than express their own opinions. Sad, but true. Advertising and entertainment has become so shallow, as have so many people. Kudos to technology for creating these junkies.

Those annoying Ab commercials and those lose weight ads that say YOU MUST HAVE BETTER ABS!! I wanna kick them!
February 7th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
it does not
February 7th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
It doesn’t. I know that they are trying to sell something and nothing about it makes me feel bad or good about myself. I also do not desire to be anyone else but me.

I don’t really notice that stuff bothering me, but some ppl are easier to influence.
Advertising screws up a lot of women because it makes them think they NEED to wear a lot of makeup and wear fancy clothes and have 50 pairs of shoes and get facelifts and all that in order to be Real Women. Some of them don’t really think they’re good inside because they think the only thing anyone cares about is the outside. Also, toy commercials make kids go MEMEME IWANTITNOW! They judge their happiness by how many toys they have, and if someone else has better toys than them they get all jealous and stuff.
Entertainment can perpetuate stereotypes that aren’t really healthy. I mean, there’s an old episode of Cosby where all the men in the family get pregnant and act like the stereotypical woman. And everyone snickers, and so it becomes even less likely that a guy will show his emotions or act like he cares about anything. These shows mainly act by making watchers think that’s how things are *supposed* to be, because it’s what they see the most often. And so a lot of them might think that all men really ARE pathetic jerks, when it’s really not true. (Most men yes, all men no. :P)

It doesn’t bother me….after all every body is trying to make a easy profit…it is up to us to believe it or not, what ever it is that they are trying to convince us To buy..if you are a defined person nothing should bother you…whet er it is those magic pills that promise you to lose those extra pounds or that gal trying to tell you what awaits for you just by interpreting some zodiac signs..there is so much crap being broad casted on the media now a days that it us to us to make up our mind whet er we want to believe or not….the realistic rule is ….if it sounds too good to be true more likely it isn’t…

As somebody who has had enormous struggles with depression, and until recently had a hard time finding, & meeting other Gay singles, watching all those happy, Straight couples shown in the ads had a devastating effect on me when I was younger, because I really didn’t want what was being sold, but it always seemed like the only game in town. As if I was living in an Orwellian nightmare.
Currently, I’m getting hand-fasted to a great guy in Boston, and I couldn’t be happier, I kept my individuality, and it’s finally paying big dividends.

The marketing industry does anything to sell their products. The effects are far more negative than anyone could imagine. So, beware….

They make me feel fat and ugly, and do good jobs at make me wanting to look for new products or services to improve myself or increase self-esteem.

TV ads are disturbing. Only a very dumb person would be influenced by most ads to buy the ads product. A great many people are influenced to buy their product by the ads, or else the sponsors would not continue to run the very expensive ads. It is disturbing that so many people are that dumb.

Advertising, the entertainment industry, and media are all responsible for giving women a very poor self image which destroys the self esteem of man, myself included.
For example, advertising, the entertainment industry, and the media portray the normal, accepted, ideal for women is
to look like a sexy, thin, Barbie type supermodel.
Look in magazines….thin, women, slender women, curvy women….no obese women…ever. Over a quarter of the women in the USA are overweight or obese, yet none has ever showed up in a Victorias Secret ad, or Play Boy centerfold.
Advertising, the entertainment industry, and the media often poke fun at overweight and obese women, very much like children at school usually pick on fat kids. Men who are exposed over and over again to that, end up brainwashed into thinking fat women are ugly and not worthy of love and affection.
This leaves many fat women very few relationship choices, if any.
What most people don’t realise is that many obese people can not lose weight by simply dieting and exercising alone.
Many of them have other health problems that contribute to causing the weight gain.
Most can’t see a doctor regularly because they do not have health insurance. Most employers will not hire an obese worker, if a thinner one is available with similar skills. Why ?
Because thanks to all the negativity in advertising, etc, they wrongly assume if a person is fat they are stupid, lazy, stinky,
and generally unacceptable.
Eventually, if someone is rejected and repeatedly told or shown that they aren’t acceptable in some way, they’ll eventually believe it…..enter low self esteem, depression, etc.

It does, it feels as if you have to look like that to be accepted especially if you watch the Agency and Americas Next Top Model, they get rejected and they are beautiful, and you look at yourself and think I am not good enough or look good, and I believe it affects the younger girls the most because they want to be what they see. I also believe it affect those the most who already have a low self-esteem i.e. if a girl is with her b/f watching tv and he’s like “wow” she may not say something but it may hurt her inside to think she is not good enough for her b/f that she can’t wow him like girls on tv.

nothing at all. maybe a little overweight but i already know that
February 7th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
it makes me feel smart for not giving into it like the majority of folk. however I must admit that food-advertising on television is effective. but it doesn’t affect my self-esteem, it just makes me hungry.
